When I was a kid, I thought artists were only famous people like in the history books. Fair enough, history is filled with them. However, I have since learned that art itself is pretty adaptable and it seems to be available to anyone with an open mind and a willingness to try something new. With those two things, I have found that being creative in art can be quite doable.
Take painting, for instance. Because of some very generous people in the world plus the internet, there are a lot of painting tutorials. Recently, I have been researching how to paint an ocean, beaches, and waves for a project I am doing for a friend.
I found one that I decided to try. I have to be honest here, I didn’t have anything fancy when I began. I used notebook paper for my palette, my paint colors were slightly incorrect, and since I was out of paper towels, I substituted toilet paper for wiping brushes. Not glamorous by any means, but hey, it worked!
Here is the link to the tutorial I used. https://stepbysteppainting.net/2021/01/27/how-to-paint-a-wave-duo-painting/. I did the single, but there is an option to paint two. Also, towards the bottom of the linked page, there is a video.

After I finished, I was rather proud of myself. I am definitely not a master painter by any means, and you know what? That is very ok because we don’t have to be highly skilled or perfect. If you don’t think you can do art, I encourage you to try it anyway. Maybe choose a medium you are interested in or drawn to, and just see. You may surprise yourself, too!
Oh, last thing. I added bling to my picture!! What do you think? Pretty cool! Let me know if you give art a try. I’d love to hear about it!
Thanks for reading!
Jessica

Very inspiring! Motivated me to try as well. The painting looks beautiful to me! I am reconciling with the idea that I can attempt and enjoy things I may not be particularly adept at. Happy blogging, Jessica.

I absolutely loved your painting! It was pretty good, and I liked the colour scheme of the background and the waves. Keep up the good work on this rather epic hobby!

I’ve always told myself I wasn’t good in any form of art, but since I’d started doodling, I feel like it can be a medium to express myself in. I’m just a bit clueless on water colour now, even though I’m pretty interested in trying it out. Perhaps I should buy a colour or two just to try. Anyway, thanks for this inspiring post!

Wooooohoooooo!!!! Look at you! I’m so excited for you. Isn’t that the coolest thing? The ‘thinking that I can’t DO art’ and then finding out that that idea isn’t correct!! False, even. And, then you/I/we/they just start. It’s freeing and exhilarating and scary as heck sometimes trying something new, but man, the payoff is huge! The learning experience itself, plus the expanding of self expression into new avenues is pretty darn cool. I appreciate the comments! Thank you!

Oh yeah, from now on, I’m going to challenge all my assumptions, because my mind really is half right at best. All the things it says I can’t do, I’ve learned that I CAN actually do. I appreciate your wonderful reply, Jessica!

Here’s to new, DOABLE things! By the way, I saw on your site that you’re considering self publishing in 2022! Please let me know if you figure out any great avenues. I have considered self publishing for several years, but have never taken the plunge. All of the choices are a bit overwhelming, so my books just sit, unread by anyone but me. Haha.

For now, I’m thinking of doing it on Amazon (will need to figure out logistics as a Malaysian author), and perhaps print a small batch locally as well. So nothing fancy. Just will need to look up on the peripherals, like layouts, book covers, and such. Will definitely keep you posted!

Hi! Thank you, I LOVE old jewelry. The broken stuff especially. It’s fun to combine it with other art forms. By the way, your post ‘What Was I Thinking’ totally resonated with me. Love that you bought those Prismacolors!! I haven’t tried those yet. Maybe I’ll splurge a little on upgraded supplies, just to follow the creative trail and see where it leads. I love oil pastels. Color blending is pretty unique. Thank you for reading, the follow, and the kind comments! Appreciate that!

The Prismacolor Premiers are wonderful. If you do a lot of colored pencil art, you’ll definitely want to check them out. You can get a small set for about $15.00 just to try them out and see how you like them. At art stores, you might even be able to buy individual pencils. If you get some, let me know what you think!

Oh wow, I didn’t know they sold them individually. I will definitely look into getting a small set. Thank you for your help!

I’m not sure about the individual ones, but I know you can buy small sets. Our local Walmart even carries the small sets in their art aisle now.

Hi! Isn’t that the BEST feeling??? I love the one step at a time type of classes. How the layers become easy to place and the end result is quite extraordinary. I love drawing tutorials, too. Have you tried any of those?

I haven’t tried drawing tutorials yet. I bet my daughter would love those, too.

Aww! Love when kids like art! There are some pretty cool videos on YouTube about 3D drawing if she would like that. We (my kiddo) and I did some where it looks like the letters are standing up on the page. Really fun!

And, thank you. That was nice of you to say! It was really fun. I may try another painting tomorrow.

Taking classes to paint on canvas is SO much fun. My daughter and I took a class, just the two of us. Neither one of us are very artistic. I kept her painting and she kept mine! You did a nice job on yours!

Awww! How awesome! That sounds really fun. Love that you kept each other’s. That’s super sweet. Was it one of those one evening type classes? I have taken some of those and loved them. Thank you, I enjoyed trying it. It was my first attempt, so I was pretty happy with it. If you click on that link, she has many cool paintings. I have tried some others as well. I tried the snowman family in the snow globe with kids I had in an art club. So cute!
